Millikin Baseball Splits Home Opener Doubleheader

The Millikin baseball team split a doubleheader with Coe College to open the 2024 home season on March 2 the Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur, Illinois. Millikin won game one 7-1 with the Kohawks taking game two 8-5.
 
In game one, Millikin got a strong performance from starting pitcher Caleb Buehrle who pitched six innings allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out eight. Drew Sutton picked up the save pitching the final three innings allowing just two hits.
 
Leading 1-0, Sam Bushur made it a 2-0 lead in the fourth with a run scoring double. Liam McGill had the big blow in the fifth inning with a two-run single in an inning that saw Millikin score three times.
 
Bushur led the Millikin attack going 3-4 with two runs scored. Tommy Shaw had two hits and two RBI and Ryan Janssen had two hits driving in one.
 
Jake Brosius had two hits including a home run for Coe.
 
In game two, Coe scored four runs in the third and three in the fourth to break open the game. Brosius had three hits including a double and drove home three. Tyce Johnson was 4-4 with three runs scored and Mitchell Eckhardt also had three hits. CJ Johnson earned the save for Coe pitching the final two innings without allowing a hit and striking out four.
 
Shaw stayed hot for Millikin with three hits as did Bushur who had two doubles and three RBI. Janssen had two hits including a home run.
 
Millikin is now 4-4 while Coe goes to 2-3.
 
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday at 12 p.m.
