Softball Secures Big Wins over UWEC and Coe

Saturday, March 2 marked the second day of softball season for the Big Blue softball team when they matched up against the Blugolds of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Coe College at the Workman Family Softball Field.

In their first game of the day, Millikin came out hot offensively as the visitors on the scoreboard, with Kendallyn Davison delivering an RBI triple to score the first run. Leah Foreman reached on a squeeze bunt that plated Davison, then an infield single off the bat of Kailyn Coates scored Foreman to give MU a 3-0 lead. Lanie Chizmark sent a triple to left center to pick up two RBIs when Maddy Regan and Coates crossed the plate, then a bunt single by Anna Enlow scored Chizmark. The final run of the seven run inning came on a groundout by Emily Kobel to score Enlow.

Eau Claire put up one run in the bottom of the first, then the Big Blue matched it with a sacrifice fly by Foreman that scored Kobel in the top of the third. Kobel then sent a double down the left field line in the fourth to score the pinch runner Sarah Lahner and put Millikin up eight runs heading into the fifth.

The Blugolds extended the game scoring two runs in the fifth, but Millikin answered with two runs of their own in the sixth with a Chizmark single that scored pinch runner Charley Condill then an Enlow single that plated Chizmark to secure the 11-3 win in six innings.

Davison went 2-for-3 from the plate with an RBI, Chizmark was 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Kobel went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI in game one.

Charly Warlow picked up her second victory of the season, pitching 4.0 innings and allowing just three hits and one run. Abby Wilken pitched two innings in relief.

The night game against Coe saw the Big Blue match up against a team that returns many fifth year seniors from a squad that made it to the final eight teams in the nation last year in Division III, ranked fourth in the preseason by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

In the first, Regan reached on a fielders choice that scored Blake. The Big Blue tacked on another in the second on a Blake single that scored Chloe Book

Coe picked up a run of their own to cut the deficit to one when Skylar Stookey homered to left center.

A Coates groundout in the third gave Millikin a two run cushion again until the fifth when Stookey took the first pitch over the left field fence. Then, in the fifth Ruby Kappeler reached on a Millikin throwing error to score Rylee Newhard.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Coates stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and no outs after an intentional walk issued to Regan. Coates sent a single to left center to plate Davison and give Millikin a big 4-3 win.

Kelsey Bruno was the starting pitcher for the Big Blue, tossing 5.1 innings and striking out five. Warlow stepped in in relief and earned her third victory of the season, striking out two and holding Coe hitless through 1.2 innings of work.

The Big Blue will be back at the Workman Family Softball Field on Sunday, March 3 for matchups against Hanover College and Coe once more with first pitches set for 12:30 and 5:30 PM.
