Softball Splits Again at THE Spring Games

Each day of THE Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. has ended in a split for the Big Blue softball team, including Thursday, March 21. In a day when they matched up against two Iowa squads, Millikin defeated Luther 6-5 before falling in a walkoff against Grinnell 5-6.

Luther found themselves on the board first when they scored three in the first inning. The Big Blue chipped away in the bottom of the inning with a Leah Foreman single through the left side that scored Anna Enlow and Rylee Blake, then they tied things up in the second when a squeeze bunt off the bat of Lanie Chizmark scored Abby Willis.

The Norse hit a solo home run, coming off the cleanup hitter Abby Spore's bat to take a one run advantage.

In the fourth, Willis hit an RBI groundout that scored Emily Kobel, then another Chizmark squeeze bunt plated Ava Zukowski. In the sixth, the Big Blue added another when Zukowski singled through the left side to score pinch runner Charley Condill to give MU a 6-4 lead.

Luther would tack on another in the seventh, but the Big Blue were able to hang on for the 6-5 win. Zukowski and Enlow each went 1-for-2 at the plate.

Charly Warlow earned the win, tossing 6.0 innings and striking out two. Megan Walker earned the save, striking out one and allowing one hit in 1.0 innings of work.

Against Grinnell, the Pioneers were on the board first in the second inning when a two RBI single plated Jasmine Oda and Hannah Dykstra.

It took until the fifth inning for the Big Blue to retaliate, but Zukowski's bunt allowed her to reach on an error and score the pinch runner Kobel. Also in the fifth, Chizmark's third squeeze bunt of the day scored Zukowski.

Millikin tacked on three more in the sixth, starting with a double to right center off the bat of the designated player Kailyn Coates that scored Condill. Then, Zukowski laid down a bunt to score pinch runner Sarah Lahner. Willis sent a single to center that scored Coates.

In the top of the seventh, after Kelsey Bruno struck out Alexa Okada, a walk issued to Samantha Chu followed by three straight hits allowed Grinnell to come from behind and walk off the Big Blue, 5-6.

Kelsey Bruno took the loss in game two, tossing 6.1 innings and striking out six, allowing just three hits. Coates went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Millikin will be back in action for their final day from Florida on Friday, March 22 with matchups scheduled against UW-Oshkosh and Amherst.
