Softball Splits Final Regular Season Doubleheader against North Park

The Big Blue softball team took the field for the final time in the 2024 regular season on Saturday, May 4 for a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin doubleheader against North Park.

In game one, though they were held hitless, the Vikings got on the board first on an RBI groundout off the bat of Kayla Lorenz. After that, it was all Millikin.

Leah Foreman's sacrifice bunt scored Chloe Book in the bottom of the third, then another sacrifice bunt by Foreman scored Rylee Blake in the fifth inning. The Big Blue tacked on two more on a sacrifice bunt by Book, when she reached on an error both Lanie Chizmark and Sarah Lahner crossed the plate to give MU a 5-1 advantage. A Foreman RBI single to left scored Book, then a Maddy Regan single to center plated Blake. Senior Taylor Young singled to plate the final run as Foreman and Regan crossed the plate to secure the 9-1 game one six-inning victory.

Charly Warlow tossed the complete game no-hitter, striking out five in the victory. Blake went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring three runs, while Emma Lewandowski and Regan each went 2-for-4.

In game two, it was the Big Blue who tallied the first run, scoring in the top of the third on a Foreman double up the middle that scored Blake. North Park's Katie Patton hit a two-run homerun in the fourth give NPU a one-run advantage.

Regan's sacrifice fly plated Charley Condill in the sixth to even the score. But, the Vikings regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when a bases loaded walk was issued to Kathryn Keehn. When Lorenz stepped to the plate with the bases loaded, she cleared them with a double down the left field line. The Vikings tacked on one more with a single down the left field line off the bat of Sydney Snyder.

Down five runs in the top of the seventh, the Big Blue plated two, first when Book scored on a wild pitch, then on Regan's double to right center that scored Foreman, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit and Millikin fell in the 4-7 contest.

Foreman went 2-for-2 at the plate, and Regan was 1-for-1.

The Big Blue will be the fourth seed in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Tournament. The tournament will be hosted by Illinois Wesleyan beginning Thursday, May 9 in a double elimination format.
