Men's Tennis Starts off Season with Win at Illinois College

The Millikin men's tennis team traveled to Jacksonville, Ill. on Thursday, September 5 for their opening match of the 2024 season at Illinois College.

Based on rule changes, NCAA Division III tennis now abides by the same rules as Division I tennis, meaning doubles matches no longer each count as a point of their own and rather one point for the winner of the most doubles matches. Doubles matches are also now only played to six instead of eight.

In the first men's match of the year, the Big Blue won two of the three doubles matches, with Clayton Maack and Matthew Kordesh victorious at No. 2 doubles over Tejas Zala and Andrus Dupre of the Blueboys, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, Esteban Durand and Paolo Tonelli won 6-2 over Grayson Dupre and Titus Ashford. The No. 1 doubles team of Cole Phillips and Theodor Wolf fell 4-6 to Jeff Wernsing and Glenn Conway.

On the singles side, Maack tallied twin 6-1 sets at No. 1 to down Zala. Phillips saw a similar fate at No. 2 with two 6-1 victories over Wernsing. Wolf notched his first individual victory of the year at No. 3 with a pair of 6-1 set wins over Conway. Kordesh saw two 6-2 wins over A. Dupre at No. 4, and Durand won 6-0, 7-6 in a tiebreaker over G. Dupre for the final win for the Big Blue.

Millikin men's tennis will head to Kenosha, Wis. for the Men's Fall CCIW Invite on Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8.
