The Millikin men's soccer team picked up a hard-fought 4–3 road victory over Blackburn College on September 24, earning their second straight win behind a balanced offensive performance.
The Big Blue struck first in the 5th minute when
Nick Orr buried a finish off a pass from
Javan Grooms. Blackburn equalized moments later, and the teams went into halftime tied 1–1.
Millikin wasted no time after the break, with
Landon Welch scoring in the 57th minute on an assist from
Alejandro Gallego Arango to restore the lead. Just ten minutes later,
Noah Horner netted a goal, followed by
Olav Kaldahl's goal in the 68th minute to push the advantage to 4–1.
The Battlin' Beavers rallied with two late goals to close the gap, but Millikin's back line and goalkeeper
Joshua Garrett—who tallied nine saves in the match—held firm to secure the result.
After the match, head coach
Charlie Ward praised his team's resilience:
"It's really hard to win at this level, so I'm proud that we managed to see out the game and get a result against a very good Blackburn side," Ward said.
"It was a great test for our boys, and we look forward to CCIW, as every game is a battle from here on out."
With the victory, Millikin improves to
4–4–0 on the season and now turns its attention to the start of conference play. The next match is set for September 27, against Carthage at home.
