Women's Basketball Drops Home Contest against Elmhurst

The Big Blue women's basketball team took on the Bluejays of Elmhurst University in their final game of the month on Saturday, January 31. In the home contest, Millikin fell 63-72. 

Millikin got off to a slow offensive start, beginning the game down 0-11 before Bella Dudley cashed in on a three pointer. The Big Blue came storming back tying the game at 13 apiece with 1:35 remaining in the first quarter on a bucket by Nikkel Johnson. Elmhurst took a three point lead to end the quarter at 13-16. 

The Bluejays outscored the Big Blue 8-18 in the second quarter to put Millikin at a 21-34 disadvantage heading into the second half. 

After Elmhurst took a 19 point lead at the end of the third quarter, the Big Blue outscored Elmhurst 29-19 in the fourth to chip away at the lead. With the Bluejays leading by as many as 26 early in the quarter, 38-64, Millikin rallied to cut the lead to 11 on a jumper by Dudley with 32 seconds remaining, finishing the game out on a Dudley layup to cut the deficit to single digits.

Johnson was the leading scorer for the Big Blue with 27 points on 12-for-14 shooting. She topped the rebounding column with six. Tatum Young added 12 points for Millikin. 

Kristin Bukata totaled 22 points for the Bluejays, and Maia Lewers and Anna Kleszynski each added 11 apiece.

Millikin shot 23-for-48 from the field for a 47.9% shooting efficiency. They bested the Bluejays in boards, winning the rebounding battle 33-30. 

Millikin will hit the road on Saturday, February 7 to Kenosha, Wis. for their second meeting of the season with the Firebirds of Carthage College with tipoff set for 2:00 p.m.
