Women's Basketball Hangs on Against Cardinals

The Millikin women's basketball team hit the road a matchup against the Cardinals of North Central College on Wednesday, February 11. Facing a late surge from the Cardinals, the Big Blue hung on to take the road victory 64-62. 

Millikin had to climb their way back, falling behind 14-21 after the first quarter. They chipped away in the third, heading into the halftime break down just 24-28. 

Nikkel Johnson was the leading scorer with 32 points on 15-for-17 shooting, posting a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds. Bella Dudley added 12 points

The Big Blue took a 44-43 lead with 1:11 left in the third on a layup by Johnson. The Cardinals answered quickly to open the fourth with a three by Jocelyn Trotter. Johnson once again put the Big Blue back up by a point on an and one. 

A made three by Hannah Ermeling pushed the Millikin lead to nine with 5:24 remaining in the game, then again on a layup by Dudley at 60-51 with 4:47 left to tick. The Cardinals dwindled the two with 53 seconds remaining after a made three by Grace Kieffer. 

The Big Blue held strong defensively, and helped by a late pair of missed free throws by the Cardinals, left Naperville with a 64-62 win. 

Millikin shot 50.9% from the field on 29-for-57 shooting.

North Central was led by Trotter with 23 points. Kieffer added 14. The Cardinals shot just 30.8% from the field, on a 20-for-65 clip. 

Millikin returns home for senior day on Saturday, February 14, for a
matchup with Carroll University set for 2:00 pm tipoff.
