The Millikin men's basketball team battled throughout but fell just short in a 62–59 loss to Carthage College on Saturday afternoon in Kenosha, Wis. The setback moves the Big Blue to 13–9 overall and 5–8 in CCIW play.
Millikin controlled much of the first half, building a lead as large as 14 points and taking a 32–25 advantage into the break. The Big Blue held Carthage to 34.5 percent shooting in the opening half and dictated the tempo on both ends of the floor. Carthage responded in the second half, using improved shooting and a late push to erase the deficit and take the lead in the closing minutes.
Ian Winkler led Millikin with a game-high 26 points, shooting efficiently from the field and the free-throw line while adding two assists and a steal. Nate Straughter contributed 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Lane Thomann added 8 points and 8 rebounds in an all-around effort. The Big Blue shot 40.4 percent from the field.
Despite the narrow defeat, Millikin showed strong defensive effort and controlled stretches of play throughout the contest. The Big Blue will look to regroup and return to action on Wednesday, February 11, as they continue conference play.
