Softball Splits with Wartburg on Opening Day of Iowa Weekend

The Big Blue softball team traveled to Waverly, Iowa on Saturday, March 21 for their first Iowa doubleheader of the weekend, meeting Wartburg. The Big Blue split on the day, winning the first game 5-3 before falling 4-6 in game two.

In game one, the Big Blue scored their first run in the third, matching Wartburg's first inning run on a sacrifice fly by Cierra Jones that scored Emily Kobel. They tacked on three in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. A walk issued to Haley Willan with the bases loaded scored Abby Willis, then an infield single by Kobel scored Summer Wynn. The final run of the inning came on an Ann Marie Meek single that scored Kailyn Coates.

Wartburg answered with a two-run single in the fifth, but a Haley Willan homerun in the top of the sixth helped the Big Blue regain a two-run advantage. The Big Blue defense retired the final three outs to take the 5-3 game one victory.

In game one, Meek went 3-for-3 from the plate and Meek was 2-for-3.

Alyssa Dralle picked up the complete game victory, striking out two in the game.

In game two, it was the Big Blue who struck first. A Coates single in the first scored Willis, then Willan doubled to score Wynn, giving Millikin a 2-0 lead. Wartburg's Reagan Hassel hit a homerun, then a two-run single gave the Knights a 2-3 advantage after the first frame.

In the second, Millikin answered with a single by Willis that scored Jones. Then, Wynn's sacrifice fly scored Charley Condill to help the Big Blue regain the lead at 4-3.

Wartburg knotted things up again in the bottom of the second to make it 4-4. With each team held scoreless until the fifth inning, the Knights the broke the tie in the fifth on a Jenna Wiebenga homerun. The Knights added another run in the sixth, leading to a 4-6 loss.

In game two, both Condill and Willis were 2-for-3 from the plate.
