Softball Sweeps Illinois College on The Hidden Opponent Day

The Big Blue softball team took the field for their second doubleheader of the weekend on Sunday, March 29, meeting the Lady Blues of Illinois College. The day also served as the annual Mental Health Awareness Day, with Campus Captain for The Hidden Opponent, Abby Wilken, working to raise awareness for mental wellness amongst athletes. The Big Blue swept Illinois College, winning game one 3-1 and game two 7-3.

In game one, the Big Blue were on the board in the bottom of the first inning, with Summer Wynn sending a double to right center that scored leadoff hitter, Charley Condill. In the third, a double off the bat of Ann Marie Meek brought Condill home again to give Millikin a 2-0 lead. Wynn was responsible for Meek scoring later in the inning to put the Big Blue up three runs.

Illinois College's Ezzy Mauermann chipped away at the lead with a solo shot in the fifth, but the Big Blue were able to hold on to the 3-1 victory.

Condill went 3-for-3 for the Big Blue at the plate, and Wynn was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Alyssa Dralle picked up the win in the circle, tossing a complete game with nine strikeouts.

In game two, the Lady Blues came out firing, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Millikin answered immediately, with Meek's single down the left field line scoring Condill. Emily Kobel reached base later in the inning, capitalizing on a Lady Blues error and scoring Meek.

With the game tied at 2-2, IC's Mauermann struck again, regaining the Lady Blues lead with another solo homerun in the second inning. The Big Blue once again had an answer with Meek's single scoring Condill, then an RBI groundout off the bat of Haley Willan scoring Wynn.

Millikin added to their 4-3 lead in the fifth with Abbey Matthews sending a single up the middle to score Kobel and Kailyn Coates. Then, a squeeze bunt off the bat of Ava Zukowski helped Matthews cross the plate to give Millikin a 7-3 advantage before the inning's end.

Millikin held onto the 7-3 lead behind Wilken's performance on the mound. Wilken posted five strikeouts and allowed just five hits through 7.0 innings in her second win of the season. At the plate, Meek went 3-for-3 and Condill and Coates were each 2-for-3.

With the sweep, the Big Blue move to 10-9 on the season. They will meet their first College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin opponent on Friday, April 3 when they travel to Rock Island, Ill. for matchups with Augustana College.
