Softball Completes Sunday Redemption Tour, Downs UWSP and Coe

The Big Blue softball team took the field on Sunday, March 8 for their final day of the home opening Millikin Softball Tournament. After falling to both UW-Stevens Point and Coe on Saturday, the Big Blue completed their redemption tour, picking up two Sunday victories.

In game one against Stevens Point, the Big Blue found themselves down a run heading into the bottom of the third. They took the lead with one swing when Kailyn Coates sent a homerun over the left center fence, scoring herself and Summer Wynn and giving Millikin a 2-1 lead.

Stevens Point answered with a run of their own in the fourth, and the Big Blue once again had a response. Brianna Denault recorded her second triple of the weekend, plating Ann Marie Meek and pinch runner Cierra Jones, then Denault crossed the plate on a Pointer error.

With a 5-2 lead, the Big Blue weathered Stevens Point tacking on two to pull within one run in the sixth, then added three of their own in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead. Millikin took care of the Pointers in a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh to check off their first redemption box.

At the plate, Denault went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Millikin tallied just six hits and fended off ten Pointer hits.

Alyssa Dralle earned the complete game victory, striking out two in her seven innings of work.

In game two, the Big Blue started off the scoring early, plating a run in each of the first three innings with three hits in each frame. In the first, Coates sent a double to right center that scored Abby Willis.

Coe answered with a run-scoring triple from Jessica Meisinger in the top of the second, but the Big Blue regained the lead in the second with Willis's single that scored Meek. Then, Emily Kobel's single in the third scored Jones.

The Kohawks once again had an answer, scoring two runs in the fourth then took the lead with another pair of runs in the sixth.

Millikin tied things up again when Willis singled up the middle to bring Meek and Kobel home, tying the game at five and sending it to extra innings after a scoreless seventh.

Despite Coe scoring a run on a Big Blue error in the top of the inning, the Big Blue plated Ava Zukowski then loaded the bases for Willis, and she delivered with a single to center that scored Meek for the winning run. The Big Blue took their second game of the day against Coe 7-6, completing the redemption arc.

In the game, Meek was 3-for-3 and Willis was 4-for-5 at the plate.

Dralle picked up her second win of the day, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing just three hits, while striking out four.
