Softball Posts Two-Win Day at Elmhurst

The Millikin softball team traveled to Elmhurst, Ill. on Saturday, April 11 for a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin doubleheader. The Big Blue defeated the Bluejays in shortened games, winning 13-1 in six innings in game one then 13-1 in five innings.

Millikin started off the scoring with a two-run homerun off the bat of Summer Wynn in the first. Wynn sent a second shot over the fence in the third to put Millikin up 3-0. Later in the third, Abbey Matthews sent a single to right center to score Haley Willan, then Ava Zukowski reached on an error to plate Emily Kobel

Already up five runs, Abby Willis singled up the middle to score Zukowski in the fifth.

In the sixth, Kobel drew a bases loaded walk to score Wynn. Then, Matthews delivered a single to score Brianna Denault. Charley Condill sent a sacrifice fly to score Kobel. Ann Marie Meek's triple to right field added onto the sixth run offense to score Zukowski and Matthews. A Wynn single scored Meek to cap off the seven run inning.

Elmhurst tallied a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth, but it was not enough to extend the game. Wynn went 3-for-3 from the plate and Matthews was 3-for-4. Alyssa Dralle struck out four in her victory, allowing just six hits.

In game two, the offense stayed hot for the Big Blue. Wynn was once again responsible for the first run scoring, drawing a bases loaded walk. Willan reached on a fielder's choice that scored Abby Willis, then Wynn scored on a Kailyn Coates single. Kobel was the next homerun hitter, sending a three-run homerun over the fence to finish off a six-run first inning.

In the second inning, Kobel was issued a bases loaded walk. Then, in the third, the Big Blue got to work again offensively. Zukowski scored on a passed ball. Condill crossed the plate on a Meek single through the left side. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Wynn plated another run, then Coates singled to score Meek. After a four run third, the Big Blue led 11-0.

In the fourth, Matthews singled through the left side to bring Kobel home, and in the fifth, a Coates double scored Wynn.

Elmhurst once again scored one run in the final inning, but it wasn't enough to extend the game in the fifth. Abby Wilken picked up the win in the circle, striking out two and allowing just four hits in her 5.0 innings of work. Coates went 3-for-3 from the plate in game two, and Condill went 3-for-4.

The Big Blue will travel to Bloomington, Ill. on Thursday, April 16 for a doubleheader against Illinois Wesleyan.
