The Millikin softball team met the Firebirds of Carthage College on Sunday, April 19 for a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin doubleheader at the Workman Family Softball Field in Decatur, Ill. In the doubleheader, the Big Blue were victorious in walkoff fashion, winning 5-4.

The Firebirds got on the board first in game one, with Gwen Hendrick's double scoring Clare Rettler in the top of the first. They struck again in the third with an Olivia Hristov homerun to centerfield that plated three runs.

Down 0-4, the Big Blue chipped away at the deficit in the bottom of the third on a two run homerun off the bat of Ann Marie Meek. In the fourth, Abbey Matthews brought home pinch runner Brianna Denault on a double to left center.

Matthews was responsible for bringing home the tying run in Emily Kobel in the sixth.

Knotted at 4-4, Summer Wynn delivered a hard hit single to score Abby Willis in the bottom of the seventh for the walkoff win.

In game one, Charley Condill and Matthews each went 2-for-3 from the plate. Alyssa Dralle earned the win in the circle, striking out two in her complete game victory.

In game two, it was the Big Blue who struck first offensively, with Meek doubling to right center to score Condill in the bottom of the first.

Carthage struck back in the top of the third, with Rettler singling to score Leiah Cardona.

The Big Blue immediately regained the lead, scoring on Meek's second home run of the day, this time a solo shot in the bottom of the third. They added to their lead in the fourth with Ava Zukowski's double scoring Denault. They added a fourth run for insurance in the fifth with Kailyn Coates scoring Willis on a single.

Carthage made a comeback attempt in the top of the seventh with a pair of singles to start the inning. Kobel snagged a line drive off the bat of Rylee Boyd, doubling off Hana Adler at second base to end the game.

In game two, Meek and Coates each tallied 2-for-3 performances from the plate.
