Big Blue Baseball Drops CCIW Opener

          The Millikin baseball team dropped its CCIW opener to Wheaton College 5-2 at a frigid Sunnyside Park in Decatur, Illinois on March 27.
          Each team scored a single run in the fourth inning, but the Thunder pulled away in the fifth with one run and then added three in the sixth.  Millikin added a run in the seventh, but could never get any closer.
          Wheaton's John Schmitz out dueled Millikin's Sean Beal on the mound to earn the win.  Schmitz threw nine innings allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out six.  Beal pitched eight innings allowing eight hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out six.
          Clayton Welker and Connor Shaw each had two hits for Millikin and Welker drove in Millikin's run in the seventh with a single. 
          Matt Schappell and Johnny Peltz had two hits for Wheaton. Andrew Laucella had a scoring triple.
          Millikin is now 8-7, 0-1 while Wheaton goes to 6-11, 1-0.  The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. at Sunnyside Park.
