Millikin Baseball Splits At Carthage

    The Millikin baseball team split a CCIW doubleheader at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin on April 18.
    Millikin won game one 4-3 behind the pitching of senior Sean Beal.  Beal pitched eight and two-thirds innings scattering nine hits and allowing three runs (two earned) to victory.  Ben Peters retired the only batter he faced ending a ninth inning Carthage rally to earn the save.  Peters now has five saves on the season tying a Millikin record for saves in a season.
    Millikin took advantage of the wildness of Carthage starter Josh Daniels to score two runs in the first inning.  Millikin scored on four walks and a hit by pitch to push two runs across the plate.  Julian Guitterrez picked up an RBI with a bases loaded walk and Brian Ekiss drove home a run with a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
    Carthage tied the game in the fourth and the contest stayed tied until the top of the eighth when Millikin scored a single run.  Eric Schurtz opened the inning with a single and went to second on a wild pitch.  Schurtz stole third base and scored on a throwing error by Carthage catcher Nick Schmidlkofer.
    Schurtz tripled home an insurance run in the ninth for make it 4-2 Millikin.
    Carthage scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on back-to-back doubles by Matt Rave and John Burkiewicz.
    Game two was all Carthage with the Red Men winning 10-0 in seven innings.  Starter Tim Sulik held Millikin to two hits over seven innings while striking out 12.   
    Millikin is now 14-15, 5-9 while Carthage goes to 20-7, 9-5.
    The two teams will play again on Sunday starting at 10 a.m.  Game time was moved up by two hours trying to get the game in before forecasted afternoon rain.
