Millikin Baseball Wins in Extra Innings

The Millikin baseball team scored an 8-7 extra inning victory over Augustana College on May 1 at Sunnyside Park in Decatur, Illinois.
The story of the game for the Big Blue was the hitting of freshman catcher Jake Stanton who went 3-4 with three homeruns and six RBIS.  Stanton also scored three runs.  Stanton tied the Millikin record for homeruns in a game set in 2003 by Kyle Kmeicik.
Augustana opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning. Vikings starting pitcher Kyle McGinley was cruising in the early going taking a no hitter into the fifth inning.  With two outs in the inning, Brian Ekiss was hit by a pitch.  Stanton then connected for Millikin's first hit of the game a two run homerun.  It was Stanton's first collegiate homerun.
The Vikings would break the 2-2 tie in the seventh with three runs.  The inning was highlighted by a two run double from John Swiderski.  Millikin would answer back with two in the bottom of the seventh.  Stanton had a solo homer and Seth Coffey had an RBI single.
The Vikings would make it 7-4 with two runs in the eighth inning.
Millikin then tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with three runs on a Stanton three run homer.
Julian Guiterrez doubled with one out in the tenth.  Pinch runner Clayton Welker advanced to third on a bunt base hit down the third base line by Joey DiLeo.  Stanton was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out.  Krigbaum reached on a fielder choice with Welker out at the plate.  Millikin scored the winning run when Cody Blunt's grounder was misplayed by Viking second baseman Trace Gingerich for an error.
Blunk had two hits on the night.  Ben Peters earned the win in relief for Millikin allowing only one hit over two and one third innings while striking out two.
The Vikings had 15 hits in the game with seven players collecting two hits each.
Millikin is now 16-20, 7-12 while Augustana falls to 24-14, 8-11.  The loss drops the Vikings out of the race for the CCIW Tournament.
The two teams will play a doubleheader at Sunnyside Park on May 2 starting at 1 p.m.
