Big Blue Volleyball Wins Twice

The Millikin volleyball team picked up two wins in the Rose-Hulman Invitational on September 13 in Terre Haute, Indiana.  The Big Blue scored wins over Muskingum and Franklin to improve to 5-4 on the season.
Millikin downed Muskingum 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-15).  Millikin Head Coach Debbie Kiick said setter Emily Mihalkanin's set distribution and ball placement was key to the Millikin offense leading to a team hitting percentage of .309.  Mihalkanin had 51 assists in the match.  Millikin had three players with double digit kills in the match led by Erin Syversen with 22, Kelsey Talkington with 12 and Emily Seegmiller with 10.
Kiick states the Big Blue had its best blocking match of the year with freshman Cortney Bohn and Erica Pleau each with a career high five blocks.
"The biggest factor in the game though was awesome defense," said Kiick.  "We totaled 103 digs in the match with five players in double digit digs. The defense and blocking played their tails off."
Cassidy Kingery had 31 digs followed by Syversen and Geena Mancuso each with 16.  Mihalkanin had 15 digs and Alyssa Visvardis had 11.
The Big Blue downed Franklin 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 25-17, 25-17).  Kingery played hard on defense and was all over the court garnering 23 digs.  Erin Syversen led the way offensively hitting .362 with a season high 26 kills and four aces. Kelsey Talkington had nine kills with a hitting percentage of a .368.  Mancuso added 13 digs, Syversen had 11 and Visvardis had 10.  Mihalkanin had 52 set assists.
"'Team Bench' provided amazing support and kept enthusiasm and momentum high for the players on the court," said Kiick.  "It was really tremendous support to push us through our first four match weekend.  We made strides through the weekend and will continue to keep pushing forward!"
Syversen earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
