Millikin Women’s Basketball’s Upset Bid Falls Short

          The Millikin women's basketball team's bid to upset #22 Wheaton College fell just short as the Big Blue lost 61-57 on January 20 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.
          Millikin started strong shooting 52 percent in the first half and holding a 19-17 advantage after the first quarter.  The Big Blue were up 36-30 at halftime and maintained the advantage though the third quarter leading 48-43 heading into the final quarter.  The Thunder started the fourth quarter with a 12-2 run and lead 55-50 with three minutes left in the game.  Millikin's Alyssa Saklak hit two free throws with 1:42 left in the game to pull the Big Blue to within three at 55-52.  Hannah Considine then took over for the Thunder.  She hit a layup to make it 57-52 and then after a Millikin missed bucket, Considine converted a three-point play to make it 60-52 with 43 seconds left.  Rachael Weber's layup with 12 seconds left and a Devin Curry three-pointer with five seconds left keep the Big Blue hopes alive.
          Millikin shot 36 percent from the field.  After the Big Blue's hot start in the first half, Millikin shot only 23 percent from the field in the second half.  Wheaton shot 40 percent from the field including going 8-24 (33 percent) from three-point range.  The Big Blue were 5-16 (31 percent) from beyond the arc.  Millikin won the rebounding battle 44-30, but committed 21 turnovers compared to 13 for the Thunder.
          Millikin got a career high 19 points from sophomore Emily Schultz to along with seven rebounds.  Saklak had nine points and a team high 11 rebounds.  Emma Hoyer had six points and six rebounds.
          Wheaton's top scorer was Kelly Lawson with 15 followed by Katie McDaniels with 14.
          Wheaton is now 12-4, 4-2 while Millikin falls to 7-10, 0-6.
          The Big Blue will now hit the road for three straight games starting on Saturday, January 23 at Augustana College for a 5 p.m. start.
