Millikin Men Edged by #5 Elmhurst

          The Millikin men's basketball team lost to fifth ranked Elmhurst College 73-65 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois on January 9.  The Bluejays improved to 13-1, 3-0 while Millikin dropped to 6-8, 0-3.
          Millikin stayed right with the first place Bluejays for much of the first half.  The game was tied at 14-14 with 12 minutes left in the first half before Elmhurst pushed out to a 41-31 advantage at the half.  Elmhurst jumped out to a 13 point lead in the second half before Millikin battled back to make it a 51-48 Bluejays lead with 10 minutes left in the game on a layup and free throw by TJ Griffin.  Elmhurst pushed it back to a five point advantage before two Leighton Lark free throws brought Millikin to with 53-50 with 9:23 remaining.  At Peyton Wyatt three-pointer started 10-2 Elmhurst run that pushed the lead to 63-52 with 4:18 remaining in the game.  Millikin's Nick Novak cut made it a 70-65 lead with 29 seconds left before the Bluejays sealed the win at the free throw line.
          Elmhurst shot 48 percent from the field including 58 percent in the first half.  Millikin shot 49 percent on the game.  Each team made 24 field goals in the game.  The Bluejays were 7-20 (35 percent) from three point range while Millikin was 8-19 (42 percent).  Elmhurst had an advantage at the free throw line hitting on 18-25 (72 percent) while Millikin made 9-13 chances (69 percent).  Elmhurst won the rebounding battle 30-22.
          Millikin was led by a career high 23 points from freshman Jack Simpson.  Sophomore Leighton Lark also put up a career best 13 points and four rebounds.  Griffin added 12 points and three assists.
          Wyatt led Elmhurst with 16 points followed by Kyle Wuest with 11 and Will Nixon with 10.  Jalen Loving had a team high seven rebounds for the Bluejays.
          Each team played without a key player with TJ Sims missing the game for Millikin and Erik Crittenden missing for Elmhurst.
          Millikin hosts Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday, January 13 at 7 p.m.
