Millikin Upsets #6 Wittenberg to Advance in NCAA Tournament

          The Millikin volleyball team defeated sixth ranked Wittenberg University 3-2 to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament on Friday, November 11 at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich.  Next up for the Big Blue is the Calvin Regional Final on Saturday, November 12 at 7:30 p.m. ET
          Millikin was on fire in the first set recording 18 kills with a .405 attacking percentage.  Millikin jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and won the set 25-14.  Emily Seegmiller had seven kills in the first set for the Big Blue.
          Millikin won the second set 25-20.  The set was a tight one with neither team able to get a lead larger than two points until late in the match.  Millikin went up by three for the first time at 22-19 on a block by Alora Goodey and Emily Mihalkanin.  A kill from Erin Syversen made it 24-20 and Kelsey Talkington ended the set with a kill.
          Wittenberg won the third set 25-16.  The Tigers broke a 7-7 tie with a five point run and never looked back winning by nine.  Wittenberg then took the fourth set 25-19. Millikin had an early 3-0 lead, but the Tigers then went on and scored seven straight points to take control of the set.
          The fifth set featured a wild finish with Millikin staying alive on match point six straight points to win 19-17.  Millikin led midway through the set 8-6 before Wittenberg scored six straight points to go up reach match point at 14-8.  Millikin then scored six straight to stay alive and tie it at 14-14.  After Wittenberg went up 15-14, Syversen had two straight kills for Millikin to put the Big Blue up 16-15.  A kill from the Tigers' Emily Kahlig made it 16-16.  Syversen answered again for Millikin with a kill to put the Big Blue up 17-16.  A Millikin service error tied the match at 17-17.  Wittenberg couldn't capitalize on the miscue recording their own service error to put the Big Blue up by one.
An attack error by Wittenberg's Maddie Fischer gave the Big Blue the 19-17 win and sent them to the Regional Final.
          Syversen led Millikin with 24 kills, 14 digs and four service aces.  Seegmiller finished with 14 kills.  Cortney Bohn had 11 kills.  Kelsey Talkington added eight kills and Goodey had six.  Mihalkanin had 53 set assists.  Cassidy Kingery had a team high 27 digs.  Meredith Artime had 12 digs.
          Kahlig led Wittenberg with 12 kills.  Aubrey Cox and Camila Quinones each had 10.
          The victory adds to an already special birthday for Millikin Head Coach Debbie Kiick.  Early this morning Coach Kiick's fourth granddaughter was born.
          Millikin improves to 28-11 while Wittenberg ends its season at 22-6.
          Millikin will play second ranked Calvin College who defeated DePauw University 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-18) in Friday's second semifinal match.
