Millikin Men Lose at Wittenberg

         The Millikin men's basketball team lost to Wittenberg University 55-49 in the Championship game of Wittenberg's Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic on December 30 in Springfield, Ohio.
             Millikin played well in the first half and a Nathan Lovekamp three pointer put the Big Blue up 21-12 with 5:19 left in the first half.  The Tigers then went on a 12-0 run to pull ahead 24-21 with 1:13 remaining.  The Wittenberg run was fueled by four Millikin turnovers.  Jordan Cunningham and Leighton Lark each hit two free throws to put Millikin up 25-24 at the half.  Millikin shot 39 percent from the field while holding Wittenberg to 36 percent.  The Big Blue had an 18-11 rebounding advantage in the first half, but were hurt by 13 turnovers.
         The Tigers opened the second half strong with an 11-3 run to build a 35-28 advantage.  Wittenberg had its biggest lead of the game at 40-30 with 13 minutes left in the game.  Millikin stayed within single digits the rest of the game and pulled to with four points on three occasions including as late as 1:35 remaining when Zach Fisher's basket and free throw made it a 50-46 game.
         Millikin had issues taking care of the basketball committing 23 turnovers in the game compared to only 12 for the Tigers.  Both teams were 18-49 (36.7 percent) from the field.  Each team made five three pointers with the difference on the scoreboard coming at the free throw line where Wittenberg was 14-21 while Millikin went 8-8.  The Big Blue won the rebounding battle 38-27.
         Lark lead Millikin with 11 points.  Tyler Pygon and Jack Simpson each had nine points.  Jordan Cunningham had eight points and tied Logan Bader for a team high in rebounds with six.
         Jaelin Williams led Wittenberg with 19 points.
         Millikin falls to 2-9 while the Tigers go to 8-3.
        Millikin's Jordan Cunningham was named to the All-Tournament Team.
         The Big Blue return to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action on Wednesday, January 4 when they travel to Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.
