Millikin Men’s Basketball Wins Third Straight

          The Millikin men's basketball team won its third straight game defeating Wheaton College 59-55 on February 10 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.
          The first half was a back-and-forth game with Millikin taking a 22-21 advantage into the locker room at the half.  Wheaton started the second half strong out scoring Millikin 15-6 over the first six minutes of the second half.  A Ricky Samuelson three-pointer gave Wheaton its largest lead of the game at 36-27 with 14:10 left in the game.
          Millikin then started to claw its way back going on its own 20-12 run over the next seven minutes of the game.  Big Blue freshman Jack Simpson hit a three-pointer with in one at 48-47 with 6:55 left to play.  Millikin then turned up the defensive pressure to take the lead.  An Elijah Kinmon steal lead to a T.J. Sims layup to make it 49-48 Millikin with 6:20 left in the game.  Millikin's Bryn Agnew got a steal resulting in a T.J. Griffin layup to give Millikin a three point advantage at 51-48.  Griffin would then get his own steal and another layup to put Millikin up by five at 53-48.  After a Wheaton miss, Millikin went up 55-48 with 3:44 left in the game.
          Wheaton fought its way back at the free throw line and it was a 57-55 Millikin with 55 seconds remaining. Millikin's Simpson would hit two free throws with three seconds remaining to seal the victory.
          Millikin shot 47 percent from the field including 61 percent in the second half.  Wheaton hit on 41.5 percent of its shots.  Millikin was 7-12 (58 percent) from the free throw line while Wheaton was 17-20 (85 percent).  Millikin forced Wheaton into 16 turnovers while Millikin committed 11.  Millikin had eight steals in the game all in the second half.  Wheaton won the rebounding battle 29-26.
          Griffin led Millikin with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals.  Agnew had 11 points, three rebounds and two steals.  Simpson had nine points followed by Tommy Pilackas with eight and Kinmon with seven.  Zach Long tied Griffin with a team high five rebounds.
          Samuelson led Wheaton with 13 points.  Joel Smith and Michael Berg each had nine.
          Millikin is now 9-14, 3-9 while Wheaton goes to 5-18, 1-11.
          Millikin will host #1 ranked Augustana College on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
