Big Blue Women’s Basketball’s Upset Bid Falls Short

          The Millikin women's attempt to upset Illinois Wesleyan University fell short losing 69-56 on February 3 in the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.  The win coupled with a Wheaton College loss left the Titans alone in first place in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW).
          The game started well for Millikin with the Big Blue jumping out to a 6-0 lead.
Illinois Wesleyan rallied late in the quarter and led 16-13 after one quarter.  Millikin answered by in the second quarter outscoring the Titans 12-7 and holding a 25-23 lead at halftime.
          Millikin opened the second half strong and lead 33-24 with 7:21 left in the third quarter.  The Titans would then go on a 22-12 run to pull ahead 46-45 after three quarters.  Millikin stayed close in the fourth quarter and pulled to 55-54 with 4:46 to play when Alyssa Saklak converted a three point play.  Illinois Wesleyan answered with back-to-back three point plays by Maddie Merritt to open up a seven point advantage with 3:48 remaining.  The Titans were effective at the line late in the game pulling out the 13 point win.
          Millikin hit on 23-42 (55 percent) from the field while the Titans connected on 25-54 (46 percent).  Illinois Wesleyan was 4-12 from three point range while Millikin went 0-4.  Millikin out rebounded the Titans 29-18, but Illinois Wesleyan forced Millikin into 37 turnovers while only committing 20.
          Saklak led Millikin with 24 points and nine rebounds.  Emily Schultz added 20 points.  Gabrielle Holness led the Titans with 18 points including hitting all four of the Titans three pointers.  Molly McGraw added 14 points and Merritt scored 10.
          Illinois Wesleyan is now 13-9, 8-2 while Millikin falls to 7-14, 0-10. 
          Millikin travels to North Park on February 6.
