Millikin Sweeps Doubleheader to Open Florida Swing

         The Millikin baseball team opened its Florida swing with a doubleheader sweep of Vassar College on March 20 in Fort Myers, Florida.  Millikin won game one 5-0 (8) while taking game two 6-5.
         Game one was a pitchers duel for the scheduled seven innings, but the Big Blue broke up the scoreless contest with a five run eighth inning.  Adam Peters opened the extra frame with getting hit by a pitch.  One out later Jon Walters collected a hit by pitch and Jake Stanton loaded the bases with a walk.  Freshman centerfielder Mason Bruce with cleared the bases with a three run triple to put the Big Blue on the scoreboard.  Ryne Bundy's sacrifice bunt made scored Bruce to make it 4-0 Millikin.  Bundy would score the innings final run on a run scoring single by Keith Askins.  Askins was the only Big Blue player to collect two hits.
         Three Millikin pitchers combined to shutout the Brewers.  Starter Phil Ganley threw five innings allowing five hits while striking out three.  John Fisher allowed one hit in one and one-third innings of work.  Jib Carson was the winning pitcher throwing the final inning and two-thirds allowing one hit.
         Denis Shanagher was 2-4 to lead the Vassar offense.  Starter Adam Erkis pitched six shutout innings for Vassar limited Millikin to two hits while striking out two.  Reliever Connor Cucalon took the loss for the Brewers.
         Millikin would use a late rally again to score a come from behind victory in game two. 
         Vassar used three straight extra base hits to score four runs in the third inning and pushed across a single run in the sixth to build a 5-0 advantage.
         Millikin started its rally in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run homer by Stanton.  In the bottom of the seventh and final inning, Big Blue senior Joey DiLeo opened the inning with a double.  Luke Azzarelli made it 5-4 with a one out RBI single.  Peters then walked.  Azzarelli was made the second out of the inning getting thrown out on the front end of a double steal attempt.  Devin Crews and Stanton then walked to load the bases with two outs.  Walters then stuck out on a wild pitch, but the third strike got away from Vassar catcher Cory Wuenschell.  Walters reached first safely and Wuenschell's errant throw to first allowed both Peters and Crews to score giving the Big Blue the walk off victory.
         Azzarelli led the Millikin attack going 3-4.  Freshman Brandon Viken was the winning pitcher in relief throwing a perfect top of the seventh inning.
         Erick Strickland went 3-4 and Nick Johnson was 2-3 to lead Vassar.
         Millikin is now 4-1 and will face Purchase College on Monday in Fort Myers.
