Big Blue Softball Knocks off #8 Illinois Wesleyan

The Millikin softball team split a doubleheader at eighth ranked Illinois Wesleyan University on April 13 in Bloomington, Illinois.
After dropping the first game 4-1, the Big Blue won game two in dramatic fashion on a walk off home run by Alyssa Voegele.  In accordance with College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) rules, the Big Blue were the home team in game two.  With the two teams locked in a pitchers duel Voegele led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a home run that cleared the scoreboard in left field to give the Big Blue the 1-0 win.
Senior Whitney Baker pitched well for the Big Blue throwing seven and one-third innings allowing seven hits and no runs while striking out three.  Cathy Lebryk was the winning pitcher in relief throwing two-thirds of an inning without allowing a hit.
Justice Miller had two hits for the Big Blue.
Mackenzie Marquis pitched well for the Titans in game two throwing seven plus innings allowing only four hits and one run.  Sam Gudat was 3-4 for Illinois Wesleyan.
Pitching was also the story of game one with Illinois Wesleyan's Jenna Noland striking out 15 Big Blue batters and allowing only one hit.  The 15 strikeouts was the third most in Titans' history.
Millikin's lone run came in the seventh inning when Brooke Heimerl led off with a base hit.  Heimerl would later score in the inning on an RBI fielders choice from Kirsten Iversen.
Maggie Graham had two hits for Illinois Wesleyan and Jillian Runyon drove home two.
Millikin is now 12-10, 1-3 while Illinois Wesleyan improves to 9-5, 4-2.
The Big Blue travel to Loras College on April 14.
