Big Blue Baseball Falls to Carthage

         The Millikin baseball team lost to Carthage College 5-4 on April 29 at Sunnyside Park in Decatur, Illinois.
         Carthage jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.  The big blow in the inning was an RBI double from Jared Helmich. 
         Millikin made it 2-1 in the bottom of the second when Luke Azzarelli drove home a run with a ground out.
         Carthage made it 3-1 in the top of the fifth on a run scoring double from John Burkiewicz.  The Big Blue answered back in the bottom of the fifth.  Keith Askins led off with a walk.  Seth Coffey then singled.  Millikin pulled off a double steal setting up an RBI ground out for Frank Barnes.  The Big Blue tied the game at 3-3 on a wild pitch.
         Carthage went up 4-3 in the seventh scoring on a wild pitch by the Big Blue.   Millikin answered back and tied it in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI from Julian Gutierrez.
         Carthage scored the game winning run in the eighth on a run scoring single by A.J. Kaprelian.
         Coffey was 3-4 for Millikin and Adam Peters went 2-4.
         Luke Mentkoski picked up the win in relief for the Red Men throwing the final three innings retiring all nine batters he faced.  Mentkowski had four strikeouts including striking out the side in the ninth inning.
         Millikin is now 15-16, 4-12 while Carthage goes 16-16, 9-7.
         The weekend series between the two teams has been altered due to the threat of rain in Central Illinois.  Instead of playing a doubleheader in Decatur tomorrow the teams will play two games on Sunday, May 1 at Carthage in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
