Big Blue Baseball Splits Home Doubleheader

The Millikin baseball team split a conference home doubleheader with Elmhurst College on a cold, but sunny day at Sunnyside Park in Decatur, Illinois on April 9.  The Big Blue won game one 2-1 while losing game two 11-8.
Millikin got stellar pitching in game one.  Starter Phil Ganley picked up the victory throwing five innings and allowing four hits while striking out five and walking five.  Brandon Viken was the first reliever out of the Millikin pen.  Ganley walked the first two batters to start the sixth inning.  After an Elmhurst laid down a sacrifice bunt, Viken struck out the next two batters with the tying run on second to end the Bluejays' rally.  Viken threw two and two-thirds inning allowing two hits and one run.  After the Vikings scored a run in the eighth, the tying run was on second with two outs.  Senior Zak Owens entered the game and struck out the only batter he faced to preserve the Big Blue lead.  Ben Peters closed it out for the Big Blue pitching a perfect ninth inning for his sixth save of the season.  Peters set a new Millikin record for saves in a season and extended his school record for career saves to 11.
Millikin scored both of its runs in the fourth inning.  Gutierrez doubled to open the inning and scored on a wild pitch.  Ryne Bundy walked with Andrew Huss at third base.  Bundy then stole second.  When the throw from the Elmhurst catcher sailed into centerfield, Huss scored.  Gutierrez had two hits for the Big Blue.
Ben Havel had a strong game for the Bluejays.  Havel pitched eight inning allowing seven hits and one earned run.  He recorded 10 strikeouts with several coming with runners in scoring position.  Havel was 2-4 at the plate.  Austin MacMillan had the Bluejay RBI.
The second game was all Bluejays at the start.  Elmhurst scored five in the first inning thanks in part to a three run homer by A.J. Compton.  After scoring one in the second, the Bluejays put up five in the top of the third fueled by a grand slam from Brandon Kresser.  Havel had three hits in the game for Elmhurst.
Millikin battled back with three in the third, one in the sixth and four in the seventh.  The Big Blue had two runners on in the ninth, but couldn't complete the rally.  Freshman Jon Walters had a grand slam for Millikin and drove in five runs in the game. It was Walters first collegiate home run. Seth Coffey and Keith Askins each picked up two hits for Millikin.
The Big Blue are now 12-9, 1-5 while Elmhurst goes to 14-9, 4-3.  The two teams will complete the series on Sunday, April 10.  The game was been moved up to 10 a.m. due to rain forecasted for the afternoon.
