Big Blue Volleyball Opens Season 1-1

          The Millikin volleyball team opened its 2016 season going 1-1 at the first day of the University of Chicago Gargoyle Classic played on Sept. 2 in Chicago.
          After dropping its opening match to fifth ranked Calvin 3-2, Millikin rallied to defeat the University of Chicago 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-23).  All-American Erin Syversen led the Big Blue with 14 kills and 27 digs.  Sophomore Emily Seegmiller had 10 kills and 15 digs.  Cortney Bohn had eight kills and six blocks.  Senior Cassidy Kingery had 23 digs.  Emily Mihalkanin had 21 assists and 12 digs and freshman setter Rose Syversen had 16 assists and 15 digs.
          Audrey Scrafford and Sarah Muisenga had 11 kills each to pace the University of Chicago.
          In the opening match the Big Blue gave Calvin a major battle.  Calvin won the first set 25-23, but Millikin rebounded to win the second and third sets 28-26 and 25-23.  Calvin then took a hard fought fourth set 28-26 before winning the deciding fifth set 15-8.  Syversen had 20 kills and three service aces for the Big Blue. 
Kingery had a team high 38 digs and Milhalkanin had 35 set assists.
          The Big Blue will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 3 facing Rockford University at 9 a.m. and Dominican University at 11 a.m.
