Millikin Women’s Basketball Edged by North Park

          The Millikin women's basketball team suffered a home conference loss 85-81 to North Park University on January 25 in the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.
          North Park jumped out to its first lead at 4-2 and held the advantage until the fourth quarter as the Big Blue mounted a late comeback.  North Park was up 25-18 at the end of the first quarter and lead 43-30 at the half.  The Vikings started hot from the field hitting on 11-18 (58 percent) in the first quarter.
          Millikin started its run late in the third quarter.  Freshman Mikayla Gilbert's layup at the third quarter buzzer brought Millikin to within four at 58-54.  The Big Blue then scored on its first possession of the fourth quarter on a jumper by Devin Curry to pull to within two at 58-56.  North Park then pushed its lead back to six, but the Big Blue again battled back and two Rachael Weber free throws tied the game at 64-64 with 5:16 remaining.  The game would be tied four more times over the next three minutes and the Yanni Saddler pulled Millikin even at 72-72 with two minutes left to play.  Amani Davis gave North Park the lead for good at 74-72.  After the Big Blue went one for two at the free throw line, Davis gave the Vikings some breathing room with a three point play to make it 77-73 with one minute left in the game.  North Park convert its free throw opportunities down the stretch and held on for the victory.
          Each team hit on 48 percent from the field, but the Vikings made 9-19 from three-point range while Millikin converted on 5-14 (36 percent).  North Park had a four point advantage at the free throw line.  Millikin won the rebounding battle 38-32.
          Devin Curry led Millikin with 23 points.  Saddler added 20 while Emily Schultz scored 14 and Weber added 11.  Lauren Moses had a career high 16 rebounds.
          North Park got 22 points from Liz Rehberger and 20 points from Hannah Rehfeldt who went six of nine from three-point range.
          Millikin is now 8-10, 2-7 while North Park improves to 9-9, 2-7.
          Millikin will host Carroll University on Saturday, January 28 at 5 p.m.
