Millikin Swimming Opens Season

         The Millikin men's and women's swimming team opened the 2017-18 splitting a double dual meet at Augustana College on October 28 in Rock Island, Illinois.  The Millikin men defeated Knox 78-64 while losing to Augustana 164-25.  The Millikin women defeated Knox 117-66 and lost to the Vikings 141-73.
         ?The Millikin men had a strong showing against a powerful Augustana team. The Big Blue men won six of nine individual events against Knox while taking the victory in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay against the Prairie Fire.
         In the overall event results freshman Nick Hoerr was second in the 100 Yard Butterfly (56.87) and third in the 200 Yard Freestyle in 1:53.66.  Sophomore Cole Jones was third in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:00.93 and freshman Jacob Williams was third in the 100 Yard Freestyle in 52.04 seconds.
The Millikin women won five of nine individual events in competition against Augustana, narrowly missing a sixth win by .02. The women won nine of nine individual events in competition against Knox.
         Overall, freshman Danielle Bickel swam the ninth fastest time in school history while finishing second in the 100 Yard Backstroke.  Senior Sami Battle took the victory in thee events: the 50 Free, 100 Free and 100 Breaststroke, while senior Felicity Speirs took the win in two events: the 1000 Free and 500 Free.
         "?It was fantastic to see the Millikin team step up and compete," said Millikin Director of Swimming Molly Duesterhaus.  "The swimmers are working hard and it shows. I will keep saying it, 'Game On'."
"The goal was to just go out and race some of the top swimmers in the conference toe to toe," said Big Blue Assistant Coach Nick Wyllie.  "I am proud of the fact that they went out there and attacked it like we had planned and dug deep for those close wins."
         Millikin will be back in next weekend at Franklin College on Friday, November 3 and at the Illinois College Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 4.
