Millikin Advances in NCAA Tournament

The 11th ranked Millikin volleyball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 win over Greenville College in the Bloomington, Illinois Regional on November 9 at Illinois Wesleyan University.
Millikin controlled the match winning 25-10, 25-15 and 25-9.  The Big Blue built early leads in each set and kept the Panthers from making a run.
Millikin was up 15-6 in set one and set two and jumped out to an early 10-4 advantage in the third set.  The Big Blue's serving was the key to the game with Millikin recording 17 services aces.
"I think we have a great core of senior players that helped the team to handle the stress of the NCAA Tournament very well," said Millikin Head Coach Debbie Kiick.  "Getting a lead in each set helped the seniors keep everyone calm, cool and collected."
Senior Erin Syversen led Millikin with 15 kills, six digs and four aces.  Earlier today, Syversen was named the AVCA Midwest Region Player of the Year.
Senior Alora Goodey and junior Emily Seegmiller each had 11 kills.  Seegmiller added three service aces.
Emily Mihalkanin had 31 set assists, nine digs and four service aces.
Goodey and Mihalkanin joined Syversen on the AVCA
All-Region team announced this morning.
Big Blue senior Meredith Artime had eight digs and a team high five service aces.  Marissa McElroy had one service ace and four kills.
Millikin improved to 28-7 while Greenville ended its season at 26-8.
Up next for Millikin will be number two ranked Calvin College a 3-2 winner over #13 Washington University-St. Louis.  Calvin, the 2016 National Champions, won the first two sets 26-16 and 25-15.  The Bears then fought back to win the next two sets 25-20 and 25-23.  Washington University-St. Louis led the fifth set 14-10 before the Crusaders stormed back with six straight points to win 16-14.  Anna Kamp led Calvin with 18 kills and 17 digs.
Millikin lost to Calvin (27-3) earlier this year 3-2 on the Crusaders home floor.
Friday's match is at 4:30 p.m. in the Shirk Center at Illinois Wesleyan University
