Millikin Softball Sweeps to Open Workman Family Softball Field

The Millikin softball team opened its new home, the Workman Family Softball Field, in grand style sweeping MacMurray College on March 26 in Decatur, Illinois.
An overflow crowd filled Millikin's new softball open to dedicate the new facility that features an artificial turf surface, lights, press box, team room, concessions and restrooms.  All 150 of the seats in the facilities were filled as were the patio areas at the field.  The crowd was three and four deep down the lines as the fans numbered well in excess of 500 people.  The grand new home for the Big Blue softball program was made possible by a $2 million dollar gift from Millikin Board of Trustee member Gary Workman and his wife, Judy.  Prior to the game the field was officially dedicated including a ribbon cutting and ceremonial first pitch by the Workmans.
On the field, the Big Blue took care of business in a hurry scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first inning in game one.  The Big Blue went on two win 10-2 in five innings.
Alyssa Voegele got the Big Blue on the board with a two run single.  Brooke Heimerl's bases clearing triple gave Millikin a 5-1 advantage.  Voegele led the Millikin offensive attack going 3-3 with three RBIs.  Freshman leadoff batter Kailey Lyons was 2-3 with two RBIs and one run scored.  Senior Marissa Padilla was 2-3 with two runs scored.  Freshman Kelsey Farmer went 2-2 with two runs scored.  Cathy Lebryk got the win for Millikin throwing five innings and allowing seven hits and two runs.
Amanda Petersen and Ravin Kibbons each had two hits for the Highlanders in game one.
In game two, Millikin won 8-0 in five innings behind the shutout pitching of freshman Gracie Brookens.  Brookens held MacMurray to two hits over five innings while striking out four.
Lyons and Kalli Farmer each had three hits for Millikin.  Lyons had two RBIs and two runs scored.  Kalli Farmer had four runs batted in.  Chelsea Eads was 2-3 with a triple and two RBIs.  Kelsey Farmer had two hits for Millikin.
The Big Blue are now 11-7 on the season and will host Illinois College on Monday, March 27 at 3 p.m. at Workman Family Field.
