Millikin Softball Opens Season with Sweep

         The Millikin softball team opened the 2017 season with a doubleheader sweep over Fontbonne University on March 4 at Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri.
         Millikin won game one 3-2.  The Big Blue jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning.  Freshman Kailey Lyons started the game with a single.  She later scored on a run scoring single from Chelsea EadsDevin Curry drove home Eads with a base hit.
         Leading 2-1, Millikin scored the deciding run in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Lyons.  Fontbonne scored in the bottom of the fourth, but the Big Blue held on for the 3-2 win.
         Lyons was impressive in her collegiate debut going 3-3 with a walk.  Eads went 2-3 in her first game for the Big Blue.
         Freshman Gracie Brookens was the winning pitcher with Nicole Koch earning the save throwing two and one third shutout innings allowing only one hit.
         Millikin won game two 3-0.  Koch singled home a run in the third to get the Big Blue on the board.  Millikin scored two runs in the fourth.  Kalli Farmer opened the inning with a double.  Three Fontbonne errors led to Millikin scoring both runs.
         A pair of freshmen combined to throw seven shutout innings.  Brooke Henze was the starter throwing three innings allowing four hits.  Brookens pitched in relief throwing four innings allowing three hits and picking up the victory.
