Millikin Tennis Wins Twice to Open Season

The Millikin women's tennis team scored two victories to open the 2017-18 season. The 9-0 win over Monmouth College and the 6-3 win over Illinois Tech gave first year head coach Alex Covington a 2-0 start to her Big Blue career coaching record.
The matches were played on August 26 at the Fairview Tennis Center in Decatur, Ill.
          The Big Blue opened the day with a sweep of Monmouth College. Morgan Bettner, Molly Angell, Maggie Ruane, Melissa Donovan, Danielle Beard and Madeline Delano all scored singles victories for Millikin. In doubles play Maggie Ruane paired with sister Kelly to win 8-2 at number one doubles. Angell/Donovan and Bettner/Beard were victories at number two and three doubles respectively.
          In the second match of the day, Millikin scored four singles wins and two doubles wins to take the match 6-3 over Illinois Tech. Maggie Ruane, Donovan, Beard and Delano all improved to 2-0 on the season with singles wins. Angell/Donovan and Bettner/Beard were again winners for the Big Blue in doubles play.
          Millikin will host the Dorothy McClure Tournament on September 2. The event dates back to the early 1900's and is believed to be the oldest collegiate women's tennis tournament.
