Big Blue Volleyball Drops Pair to Two Ranked Opponents

After taking on the 13th ranked Titans of Illinois Wesleyan University Friday night, the Millikin University volleyball team had a quick turnaround, playing in the Millikin Dig for the Cure Tournament. Within 24 hours, the Big Blue played against three of the top 25 teams in the nation. They matched up against two more ranked squads in the tournament, eighth ranked University of Chicago and the 15th team in the nation, the Blugolds of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Both matches were hard fought battles by Millikin.

In their first match of the day, Millikin matched up against the University of Chicago. They dominated the first set before dropping the next three (25-15, 21-25, 17-25, 21-25). Marissa McElroy led the attack for the Big Blue, tallying 17 kills. Emily Seegmiller was not far behind with 15. Maddi Holland chipped in 3 blocks, and Maddie Sielski added four service aces and 21 digs. Alyssa Vignos was the Big Blue's leader in digs with 26, and Rose Syversen notched 44 assists.

Against UW-Eau Claire, Millikin was right with the Blugolds, even in the sets they dropped. They took it to five sets, taking the first and fourth matches (25-20, 25-27, 25-27, 25-22, 12-15). Seegmiller led the way at the net for the Big Blue against the Blugolds, tallying 19. Syversen added 51 more assists to her season total, and Vignos led Millikin in digs with 19.

Millikin fell to 9-13 with the losses. They will continue their 2018 campaign at Wheaton University on Saturday, October 13 as they resume CCIW play.
