Big Blue Football Falls in Shootout 49-42

          The Millikin football team lost a high scoring shootout with Washington University-St. Louis 49-42 on November 3 at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Illinois.
          The two teams combined for 180 offensive plays and 1090 yards of total offense.
Millikin set a school record for offensive plays in a game with 99 and had 550 yards of total offense.  The Bears ran 81 plays for 540 yards of offense.
          Millikin jumped out to a 14-0 early in the second quarter. The Big Blue scored on its first possession on a five yard run by Nicco Stepina to make it 7-0. Early in the second quarter, Stepina connected with Jordan Smith from 39 yards out to make it 14-0. 
          Washington University answered on an eight-yard run from quarterback Johny Davidson to make it a 14-7 game.
          The Big Blue went up 21-7 on a 10-yard pass from Stepina to senior Gerald Perry with 5:45 left in the first half.
          The momentum then shifted the Bears way. On its next drive, Washington University scored on a 94-yard pass play from Davidson to Jason Singer. Millikin then lost a fumble on the second play of its possession setting up the Bears for a four-yard pass from Davidson to Mitchel Groen to make it a 21-21 game at halftime.
          The Bears scored the first two touchdowns of the second half on a 33 yard run by John Fisher and a seven-yard run from Davidson to jump out to a 35-21 advantage.
          Millikin kept battling and fought its way back to tie the game early in the fourth quarter. Stepina found Smith from six yards out with 32 seconds left in the third quarter. After holding the Bears on downs including stopping a fake punt on fourth down, Millikin scored on a 39 yard pass from Stepina to Smith.
          After the Bears went up 42-35, Millikin again answered this time on a three yard run from George Jimerson with 8:29 left in the game.
          Washington University scored the game winning touchdown with 5:12 remaining on a Davidson to Matt Goldberg 18-yard pass.
          The Big Blue had two scoring opportunities in the final five minutes. A Bears interception in the end zone stopped the Big Blue first threat. Millikin drove into the red zone on its final possession, but were stopped on downs at the Bears 14 yard line with eight seconds left in the game.
          Stepina ended the game 34-55-2 for 376 yards and four touchdowns. The 376 yards was four yards short of the school record of passing yards in a game held by Stepina and Bob Lockhart. Smith had 12 catches for 205 yards and three scores. Perry had eight catches for 76 yards. Freshman Richard Cosey led the Big Blue rushing attack with 122 yards on 24 carries.  
          Davidson was 31-44 passing for 354 yards and four touchdowns. Groen had eight catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Fisher rushed 20 times for 158 yards.
          Millikin falls to 6-3, 5-3 while Washington University-St. Louis improves to 7-2, 6-2.
          Millikin closes out the season at North Central on November 10.
