Millikin Women Open CCIW Play with Road Win

         The Millikin women's basketball team opened up play in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) with a 73-69 win at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois on December 1.
         Millikin dominated the first half leading 18-9 after one quarter and building a 37-20 advantage at the half. North Central battled back in the third quarter outscoring the Big Blue by 11 to cut the Millikin lead to 54-48.
         The Big Blue lead 63-62 late in the game. Millikin's Faith Smith had a key offensive rebound and found an open Yanni Saddler who scored to give the Big Blue a 65-62 advantage with 2:07 left in the game. After a Cardinals turnover, another Saddler jumper gave the Big Blue a five point lead with 1:30 remaining. The teams exchanged free throw chances down the stretch. North Central cut the lead to 70-69 with 28 seconds left. Briana Anthony would make one of two free throws to make it 71-69 with 20 seconds left. Millikin's Aubrey Magro won hit two free throws in the final seconds to give the Big Blue the four point victory.
         Millikin shot 44 percent from the field including going 5-13 from three-point range. The Big Blue converted 18-21 from the free throw line.
North Central hit on 33 percent from the field wand went 6-27 from three-point range. Millikin won the rebounding battle 46-36. Millikin turnovers kept North Central in the game with the Big Blue committing 31 compared to 22 for North Central.
         Freshman Aubrey Staton led Millikin with 17 points. Jordan Hildebrand had 15 points and five rebounds. Saddler had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Jazmin Brown added 10 points.
         Alanna Newsome led North Central with 24 points.
         Millikin is now 2-5, 1-0 while North Central falls to 1-4, 0-1.
         The Big Blue travel to North Park on Dec. 5.
