Millikin Women’s Basketball Wins Third Straight

         The Millikin women's basketball team won its third straight game defeating Monmouth College 81-70 on December 30 in Decatur, Illinois.
         Monmouth entered the game with a 9-1 record suffering its first loss of the season on Saturday against Augustana.  The Big Blue were not intimidated and hung with the Fighting Scots the entire game. The game was tight one with 13 ties and 13 lead changes. The game was tied after the first quarter at 17-17 and Millikin built a 36-32 lead at halftime.
         The game final tie was at 50-50 late in the third quarter and the Big Blue began to pull away in the final seconds of the period. Baskets by Briana Anthony and Aubrey Staton gave Millikin a 54-50 advantage at the end of the third quarter.  Staton scored Millikin's first four points of the quarter and the Big Blue were up 59-52 with 9:23 remaining. Monmouth would never get closer than four points in the final period and Millikin lead by 10 with three minutes left to play.
         Millikin shot 50 percent from the field for the game and hit on 11-17 (65 percent) in the final quarter. The Big Blue were 5-10 from three-point range. Monmouth made 47 percent from the field and were 5-19 from three-point range. Monmouth won the rebounding battle 34-33.
         Millikin had four players score in double figures. Jordan Hildebrand led the way with 26 points and five rebounds.  She had 15 points in the first half. Yanni Saddler added 17 points followed by Anthony with 15 and Staton with 13 points.
         Shayne Smith led Monmouth with 29 points followed by Carley Turnbull with 15.
         Millikin is now 5-8 while Monmouth goes to 9-2.
         The Big Blue return to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action on Saturday, January 5 at Carthage College.
