Big Blue Softball Sweeps Fontbonne

          The Millikin softball team opened the 2018 season with a doubleheader sweep over Fontbonne University on February 25 at Workman Family Softball Field in Decatur, Illinois.  Millikin won game one 9-8 and took the second game 8-3.
          After Fontbonne got on the board in the first inning, Millikin scored four runs in the third inning to take the lead.  Senior Alyssa Voegele opened the scoring with a two-run double.  Kalli Farmer and Chelsea Eads followed with RBI singles.
          Maddy Strickland led off the Fontbonne fourth inning with a homerun.  The Griffins would add another run in the inning to pull to within 4-3.  Strickland had an RBI double in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.  Fontbonne scored four runs in the top of the sixth thanks in part to a three-run homer by Emelia Modglin.
          The Workman Field magic resurfaced in the bottom of the sixth as the Big Blue rallied for five runs thanks to four errors by Fontbonne.
          Millikin managed only six hits in the game, but took advantage of four walks and five errors by Fontbonne.  Farmer had two hits for Millikin with Voegele leading the way with three RBI.
          Cathy Lebryk picked up the win for the Big Blue with Gracie Brookens earning the save.
          Trailing 1-0 in game two, Millikin scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning.
The big blow in the inning was a grand slam from Big Blue freshman Jordan Hildebrand.
Hildebrand went 2-2 in the game.  Kailey Lyons was the other Big Blue player with more than one hit going 2-4.
          Brookens picked up the win in four innings of work allowing three hits and one earned run.  Madyson Stallcup pitched the final three innings picking up her first Big Blue save.
          Maddie Cooksey homered for Fontbonne a two-run blast.
          Millikin remained undefeated in the regular season at Workman Family Softball Field.  Millikin is 16-0 since the facility opened last season.
          Millikin will play at Texas-Tyler on March 4.
