Millikin Women’s Basketball Holds off Cardinals

          The Millikin women's basketball team defeated North Central College 73-70 on February 7 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.
          Millikin took the lead for good midway through the first quarter and held off a late North Central charge to win the game. The Big Blue lead 12-8 after the first quarter and 31-21 at halftime.  The Big Blue were up by seven (49-42) as the teams headed into the final quarter.  North Central fought back and pulled to within one point three times in the final five minutes.  Maya Walls pulled the Cardinals to 64-63 with a layup with 3:46 left in the game.  On Millikin's next possession, Devin Curry answered with a three-pointer to make it 67-63 with 3:31 remaining.  Walls would then connect on her own three-pointer to make it 67-66.  A Lauren Moses free throw and another Curry basket would give Millikin a four-point lead at 70-66 with 2:37 remaining.  The Big Blue held the Cardinals to a least a two-point deficit the rest of the way to secure the win.
          Millikin shot 44 percent from the field including 64 percent in the fourth quarter.  North Central shot 43.5 percent and made 63 percent of its shots in the final period.  Millikin was 8-17 (47 percent) from three-point range while North Central was 7-26 (27 percent).  North Central won the rebounding battle 39-36.
            Curry led Millikin with 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists.  Yanni Saddler had 16 points followed by Cassie Somers with 12. Freshman Jordan Hildebrand added 11 points. Emily Schultz had eight points and 10 rebound and Moses had six points and 10 boards.
          Mayson Whipple led North Central with 20 points followed by Walls with 18 and Lyndsay Brennan with 15.
          Millikin is now 6-15, 1-11 while North Central goes to 5-17, 3-10.
