Millikin Falls in CCIW Opener

          The Millikin baseball team lost its opener in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) to Illinois Wesleyan University 11-7 on March 28 at a rainy Sunnyside Park in Decatur. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to wet field conditions.
          Things started off great for Millikin as the Big Blue scored three in first and three in the third and lead 6-0 after five innings.  The Titans battled back with two in the sixth, two in the eighth and a seven run ninth inning.
          In the first, the Big Blue's Devin Crews opened the game with a walk and scored on a Jake Drada RBI groundout.  Mason Bruce who has singled scored the Big Blue's second run on a wild pitch.  Jon Walters hit his sixth homerun of the season to close out the scoring.
          Millikin's three run third was thanks in part to a two-run double by Luke Azzarelli and a run scoring single from Crews.  Crews homered in the eighth for Millikin's final run.
          Crews ended the game 2-3 with two RBI.  Bruce and Luke McConnell each had two hits for Millikin.  Big Blue starting pitcher Connor Gross pitched well going eight innings allowing seven hits and five runs (three earned) while striking out six.
          Brandon Skopick and Nick Figus each had three hits for Illinois Wesleyan.  Figus had a double and two RBI.  Jacob Houghton hit a three-run homer in the ninth to push the Titans to an 11-7 advantage. 
          Millikin falls to 10-5, 0-1 while Illinois Wesleyan goes to 10-4, 1-0.
          Millikin will host North Central College on Friday, March 30 in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
