Women's Volleyball Splits at Dig Panici Classic

Millikin's Four-Game Win Streak Snapped by UW - Stevens Point

WHITEWATER, Wis. - Women's Volleyball continued their weekend on the road as they traveled to University of Wisconsin - Whitewater to play in the Dig Panici Classic. Coming off of a conference win Friday night at Augustana College, the Big Blue would split Saturday's matches, losing to UW - Stevens Point and rebounding to beat UW - La Crosse. 

The first game of the afternoon saw Millikin face UW - Stevens Point, who improved to 19-5 after beating the Big Blue. Millikin last saw UW - Stevens Point on September 21, where they would fall 3-0 at the Stevens Point Invitational. The Pointers would end the match in three sets with final scores of 25-22, 25-15, and 25-20.  

Stevens Point's April Gehl led the game with 16 kills to lead the charge for the Pointers, with Marissa McElroy leading the Big Blue in the match with 11 kills. McElroy recorded the second-most kills in the match. On defense, Stevens Point's Hailey Jarr led the match with five blocks, while freshman Jessi Kreder held down the defense for Millikin with four blocks. 

In the second match of the afternoon, the Big Blue would face UW - La Crosse and would bounce back from their loss earlier in the day, beating the Eagles 3-0. Millikin would hold the Eagles to finals in the teens for the first two sets of the match, winning set one 25-16 and set two 25-18. Millikin would end the first set by going on a six-point scoring run. Rose Syversen led the Big Blue in the second set recording back-to-back service aces in a seven-point scoring run to help Millikin secure the win. In the third set, UW - La Crosse would come within two points of the Big Blue, making a push late in the set going on a three-point scoring run holding Millikin at 24. The match would end with a kill from freshman Sarah Porter

Alyssa Vignos and Julianna Vassallo both recorded three services aces in the match, a season-high for Vignos and a tie for Vassallo for a season-high. Leading the Big Blue on offense was Jessi Kreder, who recorded 10 kills, with Lauren Brummel trailing close behind with nine kills. Freshman Sarah Porter led the match with four blocks to hold down the defense for Millikin. 

The Big Blue are back in action on Wednesday, October 16 as they face Elmhurst College at 7:00 PM in Elmhurst, Illinois.
