Baseball Blanks Thunder, Wins Series

The Millikin baseball team again rode an outstanding pitching performance in their College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory on April 1 against Wheaton College, 3-0.

Millikin starter Ben Williamson was phenomenal all night for the Big Blue, going 8.2 innings while striking out six and walking just one. The Big Blue pitching staff struck out a combined 30 Wheaton hitters in the series and did not allow a run in either of the wins to secure the series victory.

Anthony Bryan led off the bottom of the third inning for the Big Blue with a walk and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mason Bruce. Bryan then stole third before a sacrifice fly by Jon Walters scored him for the first run of the game. Walters was 2-3 on the day with two doubles and the RBI.

Wheaton threatened in the top of the sixth inning with three hits, but some outstanding defensive plays kept the Thunder from scoring. Noah Ritchie led off the inning with a single, but he was erased on a strike him out, throw him out play by Williamson and catcher Merrik Eddington. Back to back hits by Wheaton's Joel Pierce and Evan Ogden highlighted the Wheaton attack in the inning, but an extraordinary diving play by Millikin's Frank Bryan in the right-center field gap kept Wheaton off of the board.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Frank Bryan continued his heroics by smashing a two-run homerun over the left field fence to put the Big Blue up 3-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Williamson handed the ball over to Brent Beals in the middle of the ninth inning, and he recorded the game's final out on a strikeout looking to seal the series win for the Big Blue.

With the win, Millikin improves to 7-9 and 2-2 in CCIW play, while Wheaton falls to 12-5 and 2-2 in conference play. The Big Blue are back in action tomorrow, April 2 at Elmhurst College in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. For updates on Millikin baseball and Millikin athletics, follow @BigBlueBaseball and @MUBigBlue on Twitter.
