Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Wins Series

The Big Blue baseball team swept a doubleheader against Elmhurst College on April 2, 11-3 and 24-0 in Elmhurst, Il. The two wins secured a second series victory for the Big Blue in less than 24 hours, after defeating Wheaton College in the rubber match of that series last night in Decatur.

Millikin used a plethora of extra-base hits in both games to defeat the Bluejays and were led by Jon Walters, who had three homeruns on the day. In game two, Kyle Kane broke the single game hits in a game record in Millikin history with six, personally outhitting the Bluejays.

In game one, the Big Blue used 12 hits to produce their 11 runs and had five starters with two or more hits. Millikin left just four runners on base in the game, and four players had more than one RBI. Evan Lawrence earned the win on the mound for the Big Blue, going 6 innings and allowing just two runs on four hits. The Bluejay attack was led by Tyler Kledzik who was 2-5 on the day, but the Elmhurst hitters stranded 11 runners on base.

Millikin picked up right where they left off in game two on both offense and defense. The Big Blue racked up 24 runs on 22 hits in the seven innings of play, highlighted by an 8-run third inning and a 9-run fifth inning. Millikin tied a record for doubles in a game with 7, which was last done in 1988. Derek Kortemeier earned the win on the mound with his four innings of scoreless work, and the Big Blue staff allowed just three hitters over the minimum for the game.

With the victory, Millikin improves to 9-9 and 4-2 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play, while Elmhurst falls to 7-10 and 2-3 in conference play. Millikin's next game will be at Carthage College on Saturday, April 6 with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
