Baseball Splits Doubleheader, Rubber Match Start Time Moved Up

The Millikin baseball team traveled to Kenosha, Wisconsin to take on Carthage College in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin series on April 6, dropping game one 4-1 but defeating the Red Men 9-1 in game two.

In game one, Carthage pitcher Matt Willett was able to work out of several jams on his way to a complete game three-hitter against the Big Blue. Millikin trailed 3-0 until the top of the sixth inning when Gabe Soria hit a single that scored Andrew Auton. Soria was 1-2 in game one with the only RBI for the Big Blue. Carthage added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, and Willett finished off the game for his third win of the season. Carthage was led by 3-4 performances at the plate by Colton Klein and Myles Farley.

Millikin bounced back in game two of the doubleheader and were led on the mound by a nice performance by starter, Connor Gross. Gross earned his fourth win on the mound on the season, going seven innings and giving up just one Carthage run. Millikin was led at the plate by Anthony Bryan, who was 3-4 with three RBI. Kyle Kane was 3-3 with an RBI, and designated hitter Andrew Auton was 2-4.

Millikin manufactured runs in the first and fifth innings, first on a groundball double play from Brent Beals that scored Bryan and then a two RBI single by Bryan in the fifth. Millikin busted the game open in the sixth inning on a homerun by Beals and a hit by Kane. The Big Blue capped off the scoring for the day in the eighth by scoring three more on a two-RBI single by Jon Walters and later a wild pitch that scored Beals.

Millikin looks to win the series tomorrow, with the first pitch set for 11 a.m. The game was moved up from its original start time of 12 p.m. due to the threat of inclement weather in the Kenosha area.
