Baseball Sweeps Illinois Wesleyan

The Millikin baseball team completed their sweep of rival Illinois Wesleyan on April 20 at Sunnyside Park in Decatur, 9-4.

The Big Blue outslugged the Titans in a game that saw four homeruns and 11 total runs scored in the first two innings alone. Illinois Wesleyan got on the board first in the top of the first on a three run homerun by Evan Ranneklev, but Millikin cut the Titan lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning on a Brent Beals homerun that also scored Kyle Kane. Beals and Kane both scored two runs on the day for the Big Blue. Illinois Wesleyan scored again in the top of the second inning on a wild pitch, but it would be their last run of the series. Millikin erupted in the bottom of the second inning, which was highlighted by back to back homeruns by Andrew Auton and Frank Bryan. Auton was 3-5 on the day with the three RBI and also scored two runs of his own. Millikin had five of their 13 hits in the inning.

Adam Zuk battled in his four innings of work, striking out five. He handed the ball over to Jack Morgan with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, and for the second day in a row, Morgan was able to work out of a jam without allowing a Wesleyan run to score. Morgan earned the win on the mound, also striking out five in his three innings. Nick Followell sealed the series sweep for the Big Blue by finishing the eighth and ninth innings.

The series sweep for the Big Blue is their first in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin since 2012, and it is their first season sweep of Illinois Wesleyan since 1983, when just two games were played against the rival. With the victory, Millikin improves to 15-15 and 10-8 in the CCIW, while Illinois Wesleyan falls to 14-15 and 7-8 in conference action. The Big Blue will head to Greenville University on April 23 for a 5 p.m. first pitch.
