Millikin Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Wins Series

The Millikin baseball team swept their doubleheader against North Park University 11-5, and 10-9 on April 28 at Sunnyside Park in Decatur.

The Big Blue scored in every inning until the seventh and it was enough to hold off a comeback effort by the Vikings in game one, leading by as many as ten runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Millikin set a new school record for homeruns in a single game in with six. Jon Walters (two), Brent Beals, Mason Bruce, Andrew Auton, and Luke Azzarelli place themselves in the record book, eclipsing the previous mark of five in a game that had been done most recently last season against Knox College. Walters was 4-5 in game one, and Azzarelli was 3-3. Brent Beals, Auton, and Bruce all added two RBI for the Big Blue. Ben Williamson got the start on the mound for Millikin and worked 4.2 innings, giving up just one run before turning the ball over to Ryan Dobey who earned the official win for the Big Blue. The victory was career win 100 for head coach Brandon Townsend, and win number 101 would come over four hours later at the end of game two.

Game two took 12 innings and saw big comeback innings for both teams, but Millikin was ultimately able to break through and get the walk-off win. After North Park jumped out to a four run lead by the top of the fourth inning, Millikin answered in the bottom half with a five run inning that featured a two RBI double by Frank Bryan and an RBI triple by his older brother Anthony Bryan. After both teams tacked a run on in the fifth, Millikin's lead moved to 6-5, and a three run inning for the Big Blue in the bottom of the seventh inning, highlighted by RBI singles by Bruce and Frank Bryan. With the lead at 9-5, North Park battled in the top of the ninth inning to score four, capped off by a Justin Woolbright, two out, two strike, two RBI single to tie the game at nine. Nick Followell took the ball over for the Big Blue in the ninth inning and was able to keep the game tied up until the bottom of the twelfth inning when the Bryan brothers again came through for the Big Blue. Frank Bryan led off the inning with a triple, and after two intentional walks loaded the bases, Anthony Bryan struck a single through the left side of the infield to secure the series victory for Millikin.

The two wins also secure a spot for the Big Blue in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament to be played May 9-11 and improve Millikin's record to 19-16 overall and 13-9 in CCIW play. The series win is Millikin's fifth of the season, and they travel to North Central College on April 30 for a doubleheader against the league-leading Cardinals.
