JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Millikin University Women's Tennis started the regular season with an 8-1 win over Illinois College, winning all three doubles competitions and falling once in singles play.
In the first doubles match of the evening, sophomore
Shelby Jones and freshman
Brianna Barconi battled it out to win their match against Illinois College's Sally Hixson and Sophia Roth. Jones and Barconi's win came on their fifth match point to win with a final score of 8-6. Junior
Danielle Beard and senior
Morgan Bettner would also win their doubles match with a score of 8-2, and junior
Katie Cooper and sophomore
Amber Rezinas would also win their doubles match 8-2.
In singles play,
Morgan Bettner would face Sophia Roth, winning both sets with final scores of 6-1, 6-1. The Big Blue's only loss of the evening came when Illinois College's Sally Hixson defeated
Brianna Barconi 6-2, 6-2.
Shelby Jones defeated Lena Reed 6-1, 6-0 and was Millikin's clinching fifth point of the night.
Danielle Beard pulled off two exciting wins, trailing in both sets and coming back to pull off 6-3 and 7-6 wins against Kalisa Goertz.
Katie Cooper would face Madelyn Deardorff in singles play and would win both sets with scores of 6-4, 6-2.
Perhaps one the best performances of the night came from
Amber Rezinas, who didn't allow a single point in her two sets played against Maggie Dooley. Rezinas went 2-0 in singles play, winning both sets 6-0 and was the first player off the court during singles.
The Big Blue return home on Saturday, August 31 as they host Dubuque University, Greenville University and Cornell College in the Dorothy McClure Tournament in Decatur. The Dorothy McClure Tournament dates back to the early 1900s and is believed to be the oldest collegiate women's tennis tournament in the country.
