Millikin Softball Team Falls in Wild Season Opener

        The Millikin softball team lost its 2020 season opener 15-13 to Calvin University on February 28 at a frigid Workman Family Softball Field in Decatur, Illinois.
        Temperatures were hovering at the freezing mark to start the game with periodic snow flurries falling during the game. The cold temperatures made it difficult for pitchers to find their control with 21 walks and four hit by pitches issued during the game.
        Calvin scored eight runs in the top of the first inning, but the Big Blue battled back and took a 13-11 lead after five innings. Millikin got on the board in the bottom of the first with five runs. Millikin would then add single runs in the second and third inning. Calvin scored three runs in its half of the third and it was an 11-7 Calvin lead after three innings. The Big Blue then took the lead with two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fourth. Millikin led 13-11 going into the seventh before the Knights broke through with four runs to pull out the victory.
        Senior Alyssa White led Millikin going 2-4 with a double, triple and two RBI. Skielyr Trenkle was 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Maddie Holland drove home two runs with a triple.
        Sydney Duong went 4-5 to lead Calvin. Grace Stock and Grace Quiggl each had two hits for the Knights.
        The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled to due falling temperatures.
        Millikin will host Buena Vista on Sunday, March 1 in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Temperatures on Sunday are expected to be near 60 degrees.
